On September 11, the hydrogen internal combustion engine power generation demonstration project jointly developed by Zhongguancun Development Group and Deutz AG of Germany was launched in Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone. This project is a key project introduced by Beijing in the field of hydrogen energy in recent years, and it is also the world's first hydrogen internal combustion engine batch power generation project.
Deutz is a global leading independent power system manufacturer with a history of over 100 years. It was founded in Cologne, Germany in 1864 and has successively developed the world's first reciprocating internal combustion engine, four-stroke internal combustion engine, mining internal combustion locomotive, and air-cooled diesel engine. As a municipal-level science and technology innovation service platform, Zhongguancun Development Group has the professional advantage of innovative ecological integrated services and is committed to providing full-cycle and full-stack services for technology companies. The cooperation between the two parties will better promote the implementation of international hydrogen energy cutting-edge technologies in China and help Beijing build a highland of innovation in the hydrogen energy industry. In July 2023, Zhongguancun Development Group and Deutz of Germany signed an agreement. In August 2024, the Zhongguancun Deutz hydrogen internal combustion engine generator set jointly owned by the two parties was completed in Beijing.
The core equipment of the demonstration project is the 7.8L hydrogen internal combustion engine developed by Deutz of Germany. As one of the core technical routes in the field of hydrogen energy application, the hydrogen internal combustion engine has the advantages of zero carbon emissions, long service life, combustion of industrial by-product hydrogen, fast response speed, and high reliability. The equipment has reached a leading level in thermal efficiency, emission control and operation stability, and has shown great potential for commercial application. In the future, it will gradually become one of the important choices in the field of new energy applications. According to the project leader, the demonstration project started this time can support continuous production and operation, with an annual power generation of up to 1 million kWh, and each device can reduce carbon emissions by about 800 tons per year.
As a secondary clean energy with great development potential, hydrogen energy has become a major strategic direction for the global energy technology revolution and transformation development. Beijing is the first city in China to carry out hydrogen energy demonstration applications, and is working hard to build a world-class hydrogen energy development demonstration zone and pilot zone. This demonstration project is the first time that Deutz, a "century-old company", has invested in a hydrogen internal combustion engine project overseas. It is also the first mass demonstration application of hydrogen internal combustion engines in China. It will surely lead and drive the development of China's hydrogen energy industry and promote the economic and trade development of Beijing and Cologne.
